North Carolina beats California in Prestigious
San Francisco Chronicle 2010 Wine Competition

Congratulations to Junius Lindsay Vineyards

While ratings and reviews are nice, if you ask most winemakers in the US where they really want their wines to do well they will tell you it is at the annual San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.  In January, amoung a judging of over 4900 wines from all over the US, North Carolina's Junius Lindsay Vineyards, owned by Michael Zimmerman and family, had two of their wines win medals.

The 2008 Junius Lindsay Second Leaf Viognier-Roussanne won Gold, and was one of just 4 Gold Medals in the Rhone White Varietals and Blends category (along with star California wineries Laetitia Nadia White, Treana White, and VIE Roussanne.  It bested such famed California wineries as Adelaida Cellars, Kenneth Volk Vineyards, Zaca Mesa Winery, Hagafen Cellears, Sanford Winery, and Wellington Vineyard, and many others.   It is the only North Carolina wine to appear anywhere on the medal list in this category!

The 2007 Junius Lindsay Triomphe Red competed in a very competitive category of Rhone Red Blends, taking one of just 17 Bronze Medals awarded.  Other bronze medal winners in this category included longtime California Rhone producers Zaca Mesa, Eberle, and Stephen Vincent.  It was the only North Carolina wine to appear anywhere in the medal list in this category where the winners read like a “whose who” of longtime California producers like JC Cellars, Fess Parker Epiphany, Red Truck, Robert Hall, Sarah’s Vineyard, Ventana, Hop Kiln, Storrs, and Michael David Vineyards!

Taste both these wines and others with Michael this Thursday, March 11th

2008
Southern Belle Shiraz
Barossa Valley

$24.99

Wine Advocate 90 Points
The 2008 Southern Belle Shiraz was aged in seasoned oak including some ex-bourbon barrels. A glass-coating opaque purple, it displays a nearly room-filling nose of smoke, game, incense, and blueberry that leaps from the glass. Opulent and full-bodied on the palate, it lacks only complexity. Drink it over the next 6-8 years. It is an outstanding value.

Two Medal Winning Wines from Junius Lindsay Vineyards

2008 Second Leaf Viognier Roussanne $15.99
Yadkin Valley

Gold Medal - SFO Chronicle 2010 Wine Competition

A blend of Viognier and Roussanne—the mainstay white grapes of the Northern Rhône Valley—this wine is a tribute to the delicate peach and apricots aromas of Viognier and the tropical elegance of Roussanne. It has a remarkably long finish, with hints of nutmeg spice and a floral bouquet.

2007 Junius Lindsay Triomphe Red $15.99
Yadkin Valley

Bronze Medal - SFO Chronicle 2010 Wine Competition

This marvelous Rhone blend of 40% Syrah, 40% Petite Sirah and 20% Viognier exhibits aromas of red cranberry, crushed plum, exotic floral notes and smoky bacon. A sweet profusion of cinnamon and allspice is followed by a cornucopia of Provencal spices of lavender, sage and savory.

2004 Arrowood Syrah Saralee's Vineyard
Russian River Valley
Regular $44.99
  Save 56%

Superdeal $19.95

Wine Spectator 91 Points
The 2004 Syrah Saralee’s Vineyard was aged in French oak for 18 months and bottled unfined and unfiltered. It exhibits plenty of blackberry, bacon fat, and exotic fruit aromas (a small quantity of Viognier is co-fermented with this cuvee). This lush Syrah is difficult to resist, but if you can keep your hands off of it, it should age well for 5-10 years.

2007 Airfield Estates Bombshell Red Yakima Valley $19.99

Another great wine where the juice inside the bottle is as good as the label.  A blend of 41% Syrah, 35% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Sangiovese, 4% Malbec, 3% Cab Franc.  Overlapping aromas of oak, vanilla, raspberry jam, and blackcurrants, leaving lingering flavors of dark fruit and toasted oak on the palate. With a rounded, full-bodied mouthfeel, this red blend provides supple tannins ample for pairing with a wide range of foods.

2007 Foxglove Zinfandel Paso Robles $16.99

Wine Advocate 90 Points
"The outstanding 2007 Zinfandel (86% Zinfandel and 14% Petite Sirah) is another winner and phenomenal bargain. This is classic Zinfandel with loads of berry fruit, pepper, earth, and roasted Provencal herbs. The wine is pure, full-bodied, ripe, with not a hard edge to be found. Drink it over the next 2-3 years."
